Important Information

01.06.10

According to the official university policy requests to add co-instructor to your uLearn sections must be sent to help@gsu.edu by the primary section instructor (as listed in GoSolar or the Course Catalogue). That is actually not the case. Please follow the instructions how to add new users to your Grade Book. Dr. Sargent (csargent) should be added as a course designer and TA.

Brief Summary

12.18.09

The study is a replication of a pilot conducted in Spring 2009. The prior study found a large surge in tutorial use during the two weeks after the demonstration in class but then tutorial use tapered off to very low levels. Students that used the tutorials rated the resource highly and performed better than their peers on course exams. This study replicates the pilot with more instructor encouragement of the resource so students do not forget about this opportunity for 24/7 help.

Sections will be randomly assigned to "intervention" (Digital Tutors available) or control (Digital Tutors not available) using a stratified sample so that instructors with multiple sections will have control and intervention sections.

Instructor Participation

12.18.09

All instructors (control and intervention sections) will add Carol Sargent (csargent) as an instructor and designer in uLearn so that she can load the consent form for students to agree to participate. She will add a folder with all the tutorials to the home-page and a survey for students to respond to the consent.

After the first week of class, all instructors (control and intervention sections) will submit class roll from GoSolar with student number by highlighting the class roll and copy and pasting the details into Excel or Word and e-mailing the file to Carol Sargent. Carol can walk you through this in five minutes or do it for you at a Math 1070 meeting.

Intervention sections: Show a sample Digital Tutor to the enrolled students during the first week of class in all intervention sections. Before each exam, remind students about the tutorials and indicate which are most relevant to the upcoming exam.

Control sections: Tell students about the Math Assistance Complex (MAC) located in 122 Kell Hall during the first week of class. Review the hours and the location. Before each exam, remind students about the MAC.

At the end of the semester, all instructors (control and intervention sections) will submit grades (quizzes, exams, projects, course average, course grades) in Excel or Word to Carol Sargent. She has a completed IRB protocol approved by the Math Department Chair to handle confidential student data.
